It’s “Lights Out” for Google

If you happen to visit Google today, Saturday March 29, 2008, you will notice they have turned the lights out on their homepage, in an effort to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour.

Although the adjustment to the color of Google’s front page doesn’t actually save any money, they are hoping more people will participate in a one hour “lights out” event from 8:00pm – 9:00pm on Saturday, 29 March 2008.

Hats off to Google for helping out a good cause and finally giving us a different view of their homepage… even if for only one day.

Good Blog. I will continue reading it in the future. Nice layout too.

Interesting, why didn’t they just keep it like this permanently? Seems kinda hypocritical to say “it helps save energy and we care, but we’re only doing this temporarily even though it costs us nothing additional and doesn’t hurt us any bit to keep it like this”.

Television Voyeur, if you read the blog post linked here you will see that they found it does not actually conserve energy (and in some cases it actually increases consumption). The whole point is to try and bring attention to the need for energy conservation.

It is a great effort by Google even if it really does not save any energy at least they are trying something.

They have already done that a couple of times in different countries.
Isn’t turning out all the light and power devices at the same time quite dangerous for the network carriers? I mean, the electricity has to go somewhere…

Google have been helping out this good cause for a while now. I believe they are planning to invest hundreds of millions in renewable energy projects. What will we see next, Google power plants? Anyway, they will need it for their data centers…
