What Does Google Think of Hiring a Social Media Consultant?
I am often asked by clients if Google would look negatively upon them using a social media consultant to get links for their websites and content.
I have always done my best to explain that social media does not actually get links in the same way as you would buy them, but rather it gets the right exposure to put your content in front of the largest body of link givers on the web. With that exposure and great linkable content, you actually get natural links to your content, which Google sees as legit and good.
Recently I came across an interview that Eric Enge did with Matt Cutts, that further clarified how Google feels about hiring a social media consultant to help get natural links for your site and content.

Gmail Removes IMAP Services?
It is pretty early in the ordeal but about 10 minutes ago I began to get errors from my Outlook, which uses Google’s Gmail with the IMAP service.
It is now telling me “IMAP is not available for your account. (Failure)” and will no longer connect to Gmail.
It’s “Lights Out” for Google
If you happen to visit Google today, Saturday March 29, 2008, you will notice they have turned the lights out on their homepage, in an effort to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour.
Although the adjustment to the color of Google’s front page doesn’t actually save any money, they are hoping more people will participate in a one hour “lights out” event from 8:00pm – 9:00pm on Saturday, 29 March 2008.
Hats off to Google for helping out a good cause and finally giving us a different view of their homepage… even if for only one day.
Google Indented Results… From a Different Domain?
Google uses an indented result as when it finds multiple results from the same website, the most relevant result is listed first, with other relevant pages from that site indented below it. At least most of the time.
On occasion, I do a few vanity searches on keywords I want to rank for. I was searching “Social Media Consulting” on Google today, and noticed something odd with my result. Google gave me an indented result… from a different site.
